Message from the President
On behalf of the Florida Urological Society, I would like to invite you to attend the 62nd annual meeting
of the FUS. We have selected the wonderful location of the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando.
We are very fortunate to have Vincent Bird, MD, from the University of Miami as our scientific program chairman. Details of our scientific program are outlined in his adjoining message, as well as in the rest of this brochure and online at www.flaurological.org. In addition to the excellent scientific program, we are also planning a strong socioeconomic forum which includes the following:
B. Thomas Brown, MD, past FUS and past SES president, who will give an AACU/State Society update; Earl Walz, MBA, speaking on the topic of challenges for group practice in the future; William Gee, MD, speaking about reimbursement and other issues facing urologists; an AUA Health Policy Update by Martin
Dineen, MD, past FUS president and past SES president.
We also welcome all guest speakers including Dr. Thomas Polascik of Duke University, Dr. Joseph Smith of Vanderbilt University, Dr. Mostafa Elhilali, of Royal Victoria Hospital, Dr. Robert G. Ferrigni of the Mayo Clinic Department of Urology, Mark Painter of PRS Urology SC, and Dr. Raju Thomas of Tulane University Health Services, and also the current president of the Southeastern Section of the AUA.
The “General Urology for the NPP and the Allied Health Team” program will be held on Friday, September 3, 2010, concurrent to the annual meeting. The Board of Directors of the FUS is extremely committed to providing needed education for physician extenders as a breakout during
the 2010 FUS Meeting as well as future meetings. We encourage FUS members to register their NP’s or PA’s for the program. We have also taken it one step further, and are offering each FUS active member who has paid 2010 dues and has registered for the FUS 2010 Meeting one complimentary registration for a NP or PA. Each FUS active member is only able to sponsor one NP/PA.
The Orlando area boasts some of the world’s most famous theme parks, as well as beautiful state parks and museums and excellent dining and shopping. Other social activities at this year’s meeting will include golf, a Welcome Luncheon Friday afternoon, a Welcome Reception on Friday night, and our Annual Banquet on Saturday with dinner and entertainment.
I would like to express my gratitude to many of our members and administrative staff who have contributed so much of their time and effort in preparation for this meeting. The FUS is fortunate to have Wendy Weiser, Sue O’Sullivan, and Donna Kelly to assure that all the countless details of the meeting come together. I would also like to thank and acknowledge the financial support of our vendors who make this meeting possible.
I encourage you and your families to attend this informative and interesting meeting. We are fortunate to have a strong urologic community and our continued success is dependent on your support for these meetings.
Michael J. Wehle
President, FUS
Message from the Program Chair
As chair of the Scientific Program Committee, it is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I invite you to the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Florida Urological
Society. The strength of our society stems from the large number of distinguished urologists that we have both in our community and academic centers here in Florida. Many in our state society again join us this year as speakers, panelists and attendees. We are also most fortunate to have urologic experts from outside our state visit us and participate in the provision
of a program of the highest quality for all of our members. This year we welcome Joseph Smith from Vanderbilt, who will also be giving the Joseph Segura Lecture. Dr. Smith is an internationally-recognized expert in urologic oncology, has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, and has tremendously contributed to the specialty of urology in so many aspects. Tom Polascik from Duke University will also be with us. Dr. Polascik has specialty interest in many aspects of evaluation and treatment of prostate cancer. Dr. Polascik has particular interest in prostate imaging and focal therapy for treatment of prostate
cancer. We also welcome Mostafa Elhilali from McGill University in Canada. Dr. Elhilali is an international expert in voiding dysfunction, neurourology and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, and will be sharing his experience with us.
This year, our program will have focus areas on prostate cancer, benign prostatic hypertrophy, and female urinary incontinence. Each of these speakers will also be involved in panel discussions with representation by both academic and community urologists, which will hopefully stimulate lively audience participation. As always, the organizers, speakers and panelists are committed to providing up-to-date information
and will discuss issues surrounding the most effective, evidence-based care of our patients.
Our meeting will also include the annual Socioeconomic Forum that has always been an important component of our meeting, especially in this time of great change. We also again welcome the participation of urology residents from all of our state programs for the annual pyelogram hour.
I sincerely hope that all our members and guests will find our 2010 program to be both informative and highly educational. We are always open to comments and suggestions
from our members relating to both clinical and socioeconomic matters that we may include in our future meetings.

EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & OBJECTIVES
Needs
As times change, so do the needs of our patients with urologic diseases and other ailments. Fortunately, with a pioneering spirit and continuing
research efforts, urologists continually find new ways to better meet these challenges. This year’s meeting will focus on some of the largest issues we deal with every day in urology, including prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and female urinary incontinence. In our meeting we will discuss the latest scientific literature as it relates to both diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for better treating our patients. This will include discussion with both national and international experts who have significant experience with the latest treatment technologies.
Political and socioeconomic forces also have great influence on the practice of urology and all of medicine. In the tradition of the Florida Urological
Society we will address current issues so that all of our members are well-informed and will continue to be able to treat their patients in the best manner possible.
Objectives
After completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Identify recent published studies in the arena of male erectile dysfunction, benign prostatic hyperplasia, female urinary incontinence,
and bladder and kidney cancer that provide high quality evidence and are clinically relevant.
- Describe challenges and opportunities for urologists that are associated with recent changes in healthcare policy.
- Review the current state and future role of healthcare policy as it applies to the practice of urology.
- Explain contemporary evidence-based strategies for the management of localized prostate cancer.
- Assess female patients with stress urinary incontinence safely and effectively.
- Describe the current focus and direction of urologic basic science research and how it relates to clinical practice.
- Identify current management strategies for urologic management of pediatric patients in the emergency room.
- Describe current management strategies for patients with chronic testicular pain.
- Name quality of care challenges for patients with prostate cancer in the state of Florida as well as potential solutions.
- Describe the current role and limitations of focal prostate cancer therapy.
- Describe currently available minimally invasive surgical techniques for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia according to the current best evidence.
