Florida Urological Society 2008 Annual Meeting
August 28 - 31, 2008

About the Scientific Program

Needs
The field of urology continues to change. This year’s meeting will continue to focus on changes that have occurred recently.

Reviews to highlight changes in the management of superficial bladder cancer, new thinking in the management of renal trauma and changes in the management of pediatric patients will be presented.

The field of medicine is embracing the sound use of scientific data and reliance on the conclusions of well-done studies to guide therapy. A primer on evidenced-based medicine will highlight this important area.

Minimally invasive surgery continues to gain popularity and expand in scope. The current role of hand assisted renal surgery will be discussed. The role of the da Vinci robot in the management of ureteropelvic junction obstruction will be presented.

Renal cystic lesions continue to be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for urologists. With continued improvements in imaging technology and techniques, these lesions are being discovered more than ever. A radiologist’s perspective on this problem will be presented.

Erectile dysfunction is a common side effect of surgery for prostate cancer. There is no clear consensus in the urologic community about the optimum program for penile rehabilitation after radical prostatectomy to help reduce the incidence of ED after prostatectomy. Whether or not any rehabilitation works is also debated. The current thinking on this subject will be presented.

Urologists continue to be overwhelmed by a myriad of options to treat prostate cancer. The issue of whether we are over-treating or under-treating these patients will be explored. Political and economic forces continue to exert considerable pressure on the field of urology. The audience will hear about the political and economic environment as it relates to urology at both the local and national level. Strategies to help urologist’s code for reimbursement from Medicare and private insurance will be discussed.

Objectives
Following participation in this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify how to make the diagnosis of female bladder outlet obstruction.
  2. Describe the various treatment options in low stage testicular cancer.
  3. Recognize the changing management of children with vesico-ureteral reflux.
  4. Identify the characteristics of suspicious renal cystic lesions on imaging studies.
  5. Recognize when to use intravesical chemotherapy.
  6. Describe which intravesical chemotherapy agents to use for which type of superficial bladder cancer.
  7. Describe current thinking on management of Wilm's tumor.
  8. Assess state-of-the-art management of urethral stricture disease.
  9. Identify the current trends related to under and overtreatment of prostate cancer.
  10. Recognize current political and economic forces impacting the practice of urology.
  11. Describe current penile rehabilitation strategies designed to facilitate recovery of erectile function following radical prostatectomy.

About Orlando, Florida

Orlando is located in central Florida, and is one of the most popular and busy cities in the southeastern United States. Home to the
world famous Walt Disney World Resort® and only a short drive away from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Coast, Orlando
provides visitors with countless options regarding activities and attractions.

Theme Parks
A trip to Orlando would not be complete without a visit to one of its several world famous theme parks. Orlando is home to the Walt Disney World Resort®. If you want to experience Disney in its most child-like form you may want to visit Magic Kingdom® and experience popular attractions such as Space Mountain and Cinderella’s Castle. For attractions inspired by movies, television,
theater and music, spend a day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios™. Disney’s Animal Kingdom ® Park allows visitors to get up close
and personal with exotic animals, as well as partake in rides and shows inspired by characters in Disney animated films. Finally, Epcot® offers visitors a cultural experience, providing attractions that explore space, and earth, as well as a wide assortment of regionally-themed restaurants and exhibits.

If Disney is not your thing, there are other parks to choose from. The Universal Orlando Resort offers two theme parks that may be more appealing to adults. Universal Studios offers rides and attractions that allow guests to feel as though they have stepped into the movies, with famous rides inspired by movies such as Jaws, Back to the Future and E.T. Universal’s Islands of Adventure invites guests to ride roller coasters and partake in attractions on five different islands, with themes based on movie characters and comic book action heroes. SeaWorld Orlando offers shows starring larger performing animals such as killer whales and dolphins. The park also has various themed water rides and roller coasters. Guests can walk around and view over one hundred exhibits featuring aquatic wildlife.

Wildlife and Outdoors
If you are yearning to see Florida’s wildlife in a natural habitat, take some time to visit Lake Woodruff National wildlife Refuge. This relatively undiscovered spot houses bicycle and hiking trails and an observation tower from which vistors can see and photograph a multitude of Florida wildlife. With over 2,000 nearby lakes, rivers and springs, you won’t have to look far to find a fun outdoor activity involving water in Orlando. Boggy Creek’s Wildlife Safari Tours and Airboat Adventures both offer visitors a chance to see Orlando’s wildlife and nature by airboat. If your interests rest on land, try exploring the outdoors by horseback at Westgate River Ranch or Forever Florida. You can also rent a motorcycle from Orlando Harley-Davidson. If land and water don’t suffice, see Orlando from soaring heights and book a ride with Orlando Balloon rides.

Arts and Culture
In addition to its spectacular outdoor activities and theme parks, Orlando is home to a growing number of galleries and museums. The CityArts Factory is a retreat for art, theater and film. Orlando City Hall’s Terrace Gallery is free to the public and features exhibits by Florida artists, as well as exhibitions from national and international artists. The north side of Orlando houses several museums including the Orlando Museum of Art, the Mennello Museum of American Art, and the Orlando Fire Museum.

Nightlife and Dining
For an exciting dining experience, it may be wise to dine at one of Orlando’s up-and-coming restaurants. Oceanaire’s Seafood Room,
Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar, B.B. King’s Blues Club, Redrock Canyon Grill, and Taverna Opa are just a few.

If you are craving steak or more traditional American food, try Barney’s Steak and Seafood or Pearl Steak House. You can also drive down Sand Lake Road where you’ll find more than 20 restaurants within one mile, many of which feature live music. Downtown Orlando features many popular bars and clubs. For martinis and a more sophisticated experience you may want to try Monkey Bar, Room 3 Nine, or the Flow Ultra Lounge. If you are interested in seeing live music head to The Social. For good laughs, head out to one of downtown Orlando’s two comedy clubs SAK Comedy Lab or Orlando Improv.

Weather
In August, the temperature in Orlando ranges from an average low of 73° F to an average high of 92° F.

TRADE SHOW EXHIBITION & WELCOME RECEPTION
